Name: Tymaratletis Nitgralva (beter known as Tyme)
Gender: Female
Age: 8 seasons
Species: Roseate Tern
Occupation: Spy
Alignment: Bad
Appearance: Tymaratletis is big for a tern standing a handful of centimeters over the rest of her kind. She may look small with her wings tucked in towards her but when she does spread them apart it does tend to be intimidating to the few creatures that are smaller than her. Her wing tips are colored a darker gray than the rest of her body and gently fade back to the off-white that most of her body is. White speckles dot the edges of her wings and look similar to the spots on her black crest. If one looks closely she has a strange marking on the inside of her wing. Of course if one doesn¡¯t look closely it simply looks like one of those harmless family tattoos that certain species of birds are partial to. However that particular tattoo is a deep purple. It displays a dotted line with a swirl overlapping it. It stands for the Sharpeyes family, who have been spies for many years past.
Tymaratletis head is a pure snowy white, and the color starts rather abruptly after you cross her shoulders. She has the characteristic black crest over her head dappled with grayish speckles. She has soft bluish-gray eyes. They say eyes can tell a lot about people, although that isn¡¯t true with Tymaraletis. The eyes do come in handy though because they seem to soften her sharp appearances and erase the old wariness of terns in general. Her beak is a tiny and sharp although not good for much more than pecking at a small fish. Half of her beak is the orange that her feet are and the other half are a pure dark black. The colors do not fade into each other, instead they are marked by clear boundaries. It is another one of those strange markings that make her easier to identify a second time. She's constantly trying to dye her beak, although so far all she's done is get her feather's wet.
Tymaratletis doesn¡¯t have too many natural weapons. Her claws are sharp as small as they are. They can kill a fingerling with ease. But without her wings to help blind her foe her claws would hardly do more than a harmless toy stick that fledgling terns play with. Her beak is not curved like a bird of prey¡¯s would be. It is a sharp small thing, protruding out of her snowy maw like a needle. Its less than an inch around the widest point and the end appears to be very dull. Her wings, when she chooses too can stun some small animals for a moment and in that moment she usually scratches them with her claws. Her wings are probably her greatest weapon for a quick getaway and for catching prey.
Possession(s):
Tymaratletis isn¡¯t one for adornments. A spy's greatest strength are their agilness. She needs to not carry much on her, or else it will hinder her when she need to make a quick getaway. And it looks suspicious if she carries the usual adornment of knives, picks, and potions that normal spies carry. She does have some well-concealed things however. A small cheap pick is hidden under one of her left wing feathers. She carries no knives on her though, because they would unbalance her wings so much that it would be much too hard to fly.
She also carries herbs around her neck. For her stay at Arthon Castle is has constantly been thyme. It curls around her neck perfectly and smells unmistakably of the herb. Most anyone can identify the scent and they look at her curiously for it. Half of her name is a variation off ¡°thyme¡±. That is usually the reason she gives to folk if they are curious about it. The real reason for carrying it is something else. Thyme has a strong scent. It can mask her true scent and help hide if she¡¯s been poking around somewhere that she shouldn¡¯t be. She regularly asks the kitchen for some of it and they usually shrug and throw her some stems that are too brittle to cook. In the leaf of thyme she carries a small needle. It is dyed green to blend with the thyme. When she needs to she will bend forward so that the needle will prick the person she is speaking to and she can run away. Luckily though she hasn't used it...yet.
Personality:
Her true personality is something hidden under her masks. She is a quiet, hardworking tern who struggles to fit in. In other words she's a misfit although it seems strange that she is. She isn't kind if that's what you expect from her. She has long lost any feeling for any sort of tern, doing her duty and just that. She was taken from her parents before she was a season old and she hasn't made any friends that she wouldn't tear aside for an assignment. She isn't a particularaly likeable tern without a guise on. She has a crude sense of humour and is never afraid to cut to the point. Most of the time though she is a silent stone statue her blue-gray eyes watching over everything.
She is worn beyond her years. She is very mature for one so young and she handles nearly every situation with an unnerving calm. She has a high keen memory, which was refined during her training. She makes it a point to memorize every name and face and sift them off into different categories in her mind. That doesn't mean she doesn't pretend to forget some names however. She knows that folk will look at her strangely if she greets everyone in a room by name when she has only seen them once. But yes she makes it a point to make mental maps and mental groups and she can usually identify someone or something with distrubing quickness.
Tyme is afraid of sand. Or maybe just the desert in general. It seems strange. The winter frost was what made her sickly and small during her first months but yet she delights in snow. Her wings almost seem to not get wet by magic and although she won't admit it she waits for the first snow every year. The desert however contains her nightmares and horrors. During her second assignment she was in a foreign land with a desert. She was trying to get back to report to the terns . But a sandstorm whipped up and started sticking to her feathers. It weighed her down and blinded she had to stop. When she stopped though a hungry creature came by and started tearing at her. She got away but there is still a small missing feather that never grows back on her left wing. The animal, whose face she never saw, but whose yellow eyes she remembers are her worst nightmare.
History:
Tyme is only eight seasons old, but she has a very colorful and maybe even a bit dark of a history. But of course we have to start where all characters start, with the tale of their parents.
Mutalana was one of the few tern families that were on the good side. Mutalana lived with her family for many seasons. But one day she wanted to go farther than Arthon castle and so she said goodbye and flew as far as she could. That was when she met Dr'akaln. He was a spy of course even as one of the more lower class. He was simply circling around the portion of forest he was supposed to be guarding. It was boring work, but Dr'akaln had never been good with anything else so he was assigned to that.
While he was flying he saw a beautiful fairy tern whose name was Mutalana. He dove forward towards her and ended up crashing into the tree because of his clumsiness. Dr'akaln's excuse for seeing Mutalana was that he was "patroling". Mutalana was cautious when she saw Dr'akaln. She couldn't place which family he belonged to. Or which side he was on for a matter of fact. As he was ordered D'rakaln produced a false surname, and said that he was a neutral. This was due to the fact that saying that one was neutral would help with making sure that the animal didn't clam up after they'd announced sides.
Mutalana fell in love with the clumsy bird. One day though Dr'akaln's father came to check in on his son's report. He made it terribly clear that they were on the bad side. He simply assumed that his son wouldn't associate with a tern on the good side for anything other than spy work. Mutalana still loved him though. She flew back to Arthon Castle and announced sorowfully that the bird she loved was on the bad side. Her family protested. But Mutalana flew away, back to where Dr'aklan was. They mated very late in the season. It was something that got both of them thrown out of their families.
The winter was harsh, with very little to eat. The ocean froze early and it snowed close to every hour of the day. Mutalana had five eggs. Two were cold when she laid them. The other three were alive, if only by a single frayed thread. Mutalana tried to stay on the nest on all hours, because she was afraid that her already chilly eggs would die without steady warmth from her. One day though she had to leave to try and find some nourishment for herself. D'rkaln had been trying to bring back food for her but it was scarce and Mutalana had always been better at finding things then her. While she was gone however a hungry bird flew by and gobbled up two of her eggs. D'raklan tried to drive them away but it was an eagle and he was only a small Roseate tern. Luckily Mutalana came back in time to save the last egg.
When the egg hatched it was still cold, in the middle of January. It was a terrible time for hatchlings and both Mutalana and Dr'akaln regretted that they hadn't waited for the warm season. Perhaps then all five of their chicks would have survived. They named her "Thyme Heart" in a foreign language. They wanted her to be a strong child; as strong as the scent of thyme was. But still it was hard to get the food for all three of them. Tyme was small and sickly in those early months, her soft cries only a fraction of the sound they should have been. And she had no one to play with. In a normal tern colony it would have been warm and the cliff would have been alive with dibbun tern's playing with each other. But for Tyme there were no such friends to make. She sat quietly listening to her mother and father tell her stories and watching around, alert to everything.
By the time it was summer she was ready to fly. On one such flight she met one of her relatives. She didn't know of course. But she was simply delighted at the thought of meeting a tern other than her mother or father. The particular tern was her uncle, one of Dr'aklan's brothers. He knew after observing her for a while that with proper training she would be a great spy. But he was also curious. It was strange for a tern that was less than a season old to be of that particular age in the summer. If she ha d been born properly she should have still been in her nest the proper feathers only now growing in.
He followed her to her nest, undercover of course. When he met his brother he was shocked. And even more shocked at the fairy tern he had mated with. But he told them quietly to let them take their only daughter back to the cliffs of the Roseate terns to train. Mutalana was angry. She did not understand what all this "spy" business was about. But Dr'akaln as sad as he was knew that Tyme could blossom into a well-known and aceppted tern back in his family. So tyme left with her uncle not knowing that she would probably never see them again until many, many, seasons later.
At the cliffs the other dibbuns treated her in an odd way. They respected her because of her ranking as a spy in training but never moved to befriend her because of her mixed blood. She was just as lonely as she had been back at home, maybe even more. So she dived into her training with furiosity always being more concetrated then the other terns. The teachers held a grudge against her. They didn't believe a tern who had a mother who was on the good side could ever be a proper spy. But Tyme strove to prove them wrong, and she did many times during those two seasons that she trained. At the end of those two seasons she got the Nitgralva spy mark on her wing.
The third season she was sent off to her first assignment. The first ones were never serious. No one ever trusted a fresh spy tern very much. But Tyme did well and reported a good deal of information. She was moved to two other places during that season. Finally because of all her good work she was sent to Arthon Castle at the start of her fourth season. Of course she wasn't the main spy. There were other animals that worked for the bad side although Tyme was not informed of their names. Arthon castle unsettled her. It was far away from the ocean and all the different animals unnerved her. She knew she would have to be especially careful there because if she got caught she would probably be shot with an arrow through both wings before she made it out of the castle grounds. Tyme wandered there pulling one of the fake stories they were supposed to pull out of their heads. She now works in the kitchen although she's trying to get recruited as a guard. Or maybe a messenger. She needs to get more information although the terns are making do with her scant kitchen gossip right now. She does also scout other areas occasionally when Arthon Castle seems drained of information for the moment.
