Hethren, the young burrowing owl, was up an hour before midnight. He wanted an early start on his daily wanderings--he is mainly nocturnal--always searching for the gulls who murdered his mother.
Hethren knew most gulls stuck to the shore and he fervently hoped he was heading the right direction.
The small owl soared up into the dark sky, trying to catch a glimspe of what was ahead. Even thought the he was nervous, Hethren couldn't help but admire the beauty of the landscape around him; the shining stars, glowing moon, treetops swaying in the night breezes.
Hethren flapped his strong wings faster as he admired moonlight reflecting off a narrow stream far below.
The young owl was tired; he barely got any sleep the day before, having traveled almost the whole time. Hethren's eyelids were starting to droop, and he knew it. Hethren did not want to end up crashing into something, so he began flying at a faster pace, eyes wide open.
As the young owl was trying to keep himself awake, he suddenly noticed a shaped in the trees below. Hethren's vision was excellent ast night, but he still couldn't see what the shape was clear enough to determine what it was. Hethren began swooping down quietly, his wings naturally silent.
As the young owl got closer the shape moved out of the trees and into plain view.

Seiko Jetfang watched with interest as the young owl flew down. She had seen he shape just moments before. Drawing a cutlass, she motioned to her horde, indicating they stay in the trees, then stabbed upward with the weapon at the owl's head.
One of her horde, a rat, began firing arrows, and she silenced it with a whip of her tail, in which she held a knife.

Hethren screeched as the cougar's blade sliced some feathers of the top of his head.
The young burrowing owl has never seen a cougar before, but he heard talk of how fearsome, scary, and evil they were. Hethren saw why.
The young owl was about to flee, but then decided he could maybe pick one or two off, then when it gets bad he could easily fly off.
Hethren circled behind the cougar and tried to slash at the back of her head with his talons.

Seiko growled in pain as the owl's talons scraped the back of her head, but the knife in her curled tail shot up at the owl and a paw reached up to grab one of the owl's legs.
'Attack!' Seiko screamed, fangs gleaming as she spat out the word at her horde, who immediately started firing arrows at the bird.

Hethren knew he got more than he bargained for. The burrowing owl barely dodged the cougar's paws, but the knife slashed his chest, but it was not going to kill him.
Hethren tried to tear at the cougar's face with his beak and talons. His chest was stinging but the young owl fought on.

The owl's talon burrowed into her face, pulling out a chunk of flesh. That was the breaking point for the cougar, who sprang up, tail lashing back and forth, knife slashing at the bird, pearl teeth bared. The vermin stopped firing and gazed at their leader.

Hethren screeched, he was nervous, but having the ability to fly away slightly comforted him. The burrowing owl's left wing was cut from the knife in the cougar's tail, but to make sure the wing was still able to use Hethren flapped upward, satisfied that his wing was all right. Then the young owl swooped down and lashed out with his talons, trying to catch the cougar on the nose.

Seiko jumped upward, trying to land on the owl's back and plunge the blade into its chest...then she jumped back to the ground and stabbed viciously at everybeast near her, working herself into a frenzy....
'Die, bird, die!'

Hethren flew upward, amazed and disgustedthat the cougar could easily slay her own creatures. The young burrowing owl was wounded from the knife in four places, blood was pouring from one; Hethren managed to stop the other two from bleeding by clamping his wing on the wounds.
Hethren thought about retreating; he was only one bird against a horde of vermin, but eventually Hethren decided to stay and fight some more.

Seiko Jetfang lifted her cutlass and hurled it at the bird, then picked up a war-hammer from one of the rats she had slain and hit at the owl with it viciously, using her tail to comandeer the knife as well. It flashed back and forth at the burrowing owl, slashing, stabbing, and hacking at the creature. She aimed the war hammer at Hethren's body and threw it, laughing madly.

Hethren dove under the cutlass that the cougar threw at him, luckily it missed.
The knife tore into the young owl's left side. That was enough. Hethren managed to swoop upwards into the night sky, gasping for air while trying to retreat.
The war-hammer went shooting by, into a nearby tree.
